The FIRST Robotics Competition

The FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) is an international varsity sport of the mind designed to help high-school-aged young people discover how interesting and rewarding the life of engineers and researchers can be. The FIRST Robotics Competition challenges teams of young people and their mentors to solve a common problem in a six-week time frame using a common set of rules. Teams build robots from the parts and enter them in competitions designed by Dean Kamen, Dr. Woodie Flowers, and a committee of engineers and other professionals. FIRST redefines winning for these students because they are rewarded for excellence in design, demonstrated team spirit, gracious professionalism and maturity, and the ability to overcome obstacles. Scoring the most points is a secondary goal. Winning means building partnerships that last. For more information on FIRST, click here.

Team History

Crescent Valley Robotics is a nine year old FIRST Robotics team. Since our rookie year, when we earned the Motorola Quality Award, we have maintained a history of quality and craftsmanship. In recent years, we have strived to improve the team organization and breadth. Since the 2007-2008 school year, the robotics team is also running a robotics class that is eligible for credit through Crescent Valley High School. We also promote our team by participating in school club fairs, open houses, as well as giving presentations about our team to local elementary and middle schools.

Team Structure

CVHS Robotics fluctuates from about 20 to 40 members. Typically, we have about 20 dedicated members by the time the competition season starts. About one-fourth of our team is female. We pride ourselves in being a student-driven and mentor-supported team. Mentors are a vital part of the team, as they provide us with support and experience. All mentors are volunteers and often have another job that they go to everyday before coming to robotics. Both students and mentors come out of the season feeling like they have accomplished something great.

2010 Member List

When students join, they usually pick a sub-team to enter. There are 4 technical sub teams (Mechanical, Electronics, Programming, and Animation) and 4 non-technical sub teams (Fundraising, Public Relations, Scouting, and Media).
